Blog pressure!
Where does the time go?
You tell yourself that a post a week should be manageable, then you realise that you've let another month slip past!
But what a good month. Even if not sportingly good. We were twice comprehensively beaten by the All blacks. We were thrashed by the Wallabies. We were denied the semi-finals of Euro 2004 by a retinally disadvantages Swiss.
Thank God for cricket and Henman's continued inclusion in Wimbledon, even if the speed of his exit is currently being hampered by the traditional English summer.
So, a good month regardless. Last night was particularly excellent. Me, the VA, the Turk (can I say that?) and Hollywood's Seamstress. A Pub. Wine. Beer. And conversation which drifted from the playlist for Holly and Turk's upcoming wedding (of which more later) and our recent departure from Portugal. I also learned how lucky I'd been on Thursday.
Thursday. A bar in Lausanne. I watched a very exciting Portuguese win over the English helped by the inability of our captain to kick a ball 12 yards with a professional degree of accuracy. Unfortunately, his role was that of supporting player to the lead Blighty goal-dodger: the referee.
Now, I was working. With clients, a dozen or so of them. It's fair to say that the Westbrook's usual placid demeanor becomes positively genial when in the company of the people who pay for his existence.
But national pride was on the line, and my companions (each of a different, other, nation) were willing to accommodate the odd deviation from normal. Hence, Beckham was receiving a great deal of colourful advice and judgment.
Had, however, I known then that the ref was a rosti-munching, watch-making, pocket-knife-bearing fondu-fiend, I'm sure the deviations would have been too far. I'd have attracted the wrong kind of raised eyebrows from my clients, and, more importantly, the sharpening of native glances. I doubt that this raising and sharpening would have done much to maintain my wealth nor health.
Much, then, was my relief upon discovering this cuckoo-clockery only once I was safely returned to the company of friends in a London pub. Lucky escape Westbrook.
Back to that play list. They need themes for our generation. Most of our Friday night drunken suggestions were already covered. Things like:
Everybody needs somebody by the Blues Brothers, Duran Duran's Planet Earth, Come on Eileen, Echo Beach, Twist and Shout, Sit Down, etc, etc.
Any suggestions, they've got a whole evening to fill?
Come on Tim
